30 December 2017, Middle Lake (Gold Valley)

With hindsight I should’ve probably given this match a miss as at the time I’d been suffering with a bad cold for the best part of two weeks – however, having already missed a couple of matches and having spent a good deal of time indoors over Christmas I was keen to get on the bank for some fresh air.

All the gear ...

The weather on the day was amazingly mild – when we left home at 7am the temperature gauge on the van was reading 11 degrees Celsius, an amazing figure for the end of December. Unfortunately, this unseasonable temperature was driven by some really strong south-westerly winds that would make fishing the pole impossible for all but the final half an hour.

The usual winter bait options

Given the warm weather I had thought that the venue was going to fish really well so I settled on a positive plan to alternate between a maggot feeder and a cage feeder at around 14.5m – after all if the wind had allowed it this is where I’d have fished on the pole and as all the others fished to the central rope I’d have this line to myself.

The view to the left

As it happened this plan was fatally flawed as virtually all of the fish that were caught on the day were caught from the middle of the lake (i.e. to the rope) and even when I was able to fish at 13m on the pole in the final half an hour I still couldn’t put anything together despite the fading light levels making for near perfect conditions.

Peg 79 today

The one bite/fish that I did manage came at about 10:45 and gave me real hope that the approach I was following (casting every 2 or 3 minutes in an attempt to drag some fish into the area and stimulate some kind of feeding response) was going to work. However it wasn’t to be though the people around me hardly bagged-up with two or three fish being a typical return.

Big sky

I did fish to the rope for half an hour during the middle of the match but apart from a liner on the first chuck no proper bites materialised. Would I have been better off fishing to the rope all day? Probably. Would it have led to a positive result? Probably not! In the end the floating concrete block moored opposite 75 and 93 acted like a magnet to the fish with the guys on those pegs catching on the feeder all day long and catching more than the rest of us put together, with most of the field really struggling for bites.

Until next time ...

10 December 2017, Middle Lake (Gold Valley)

Talk about "from hero to zero"!!! I actually drew the same peg as last week (73 on the Middle Lake at Gold Valley) but this week everybody was supposedly on the epicentre as the ten of us were pegged 72, 73, 74, 75 and 76 with the same pegging on the far bank directly opposite. As ever the fish didn't read the script with the weights increasing in a strikingly uniform manner towards the far end with Geoff Miles winning the match with 37-8-0 from 76, a good ten pounds clear of his nearest rival (the guy on 75).

Not ideal fishing weather!!!

My match started rather slowly - after surviving heavy rain, 50mph winds and a smattering of sleet for 4 hours and 20 on the feeder without even a hint of a line bite I was eventually able to fish the pole in the last 40 minutes where I managed to winkle-out six nice new F1s for 8-8-0 and a "thanks for coming", though at least I managed to avoid the dreaded Blankety Blank cheque book and pen that was definitely on the cards!!! Well done Geoff and to my old mate Dave Carter for smashing me off the next peg with 17lb plus ...

Roll on summer!!!

03 December 2017, Middle Lake (Gold Valley)

Nice day on a brutally peggy Middle Lake at Gold Valley today - this lake is absolutely stuffed with fish (apparently they are going to add some more water to the lake next week there are now that many fish in there) but last week's frosts have seen the fish shoal-up in typical winter mode.

Middle Lake, peg 73

Unusually (and in complete contrast to last winter) the fish have collected in the centre of the lake where there are no obvious features or cover! Luckily for me I landed on peg 73 and somehow manged to winkle out 39 F1s and my first ever ide for a match winning 52-14-0, with Dan Blackwell in second place on the peg to my left and Anthony Thomas in third place on the peg to my right. I'm probably going to blank next weekend so I'm going to enjoy it while I can!!!

More tea vicar?

Until next time ...

25 November 2017, Syndicate Lake (Gold Valley)

Something different today in the form of a WC (also known as Callum Dicks and Will Raison) Group Coaching day today - I'm not going to give away any secrets but I will say that I really enjoyed the day and can't wait to get back on the bank next weekend with a few new tricks up my sleeve!!!

Nice hats

Sunday 12 November 2017

12 November 2017, New Lake (Willinghurst)

A return to Willinghurst today for the open held across Top Lake and New Lake - having had some real disasters on New Lake already this year I was desperate to avoid it so obviously I landed on New Lake peg 2!!! Despite the cold win and ultra-clear water I actually managed 4 bites from carp - the first two ended-up in the net but agonisingly the other two came-off, something that really cost me as only 5 carp won the lake!!! Interestingly three of the bites came from the margin in front of peg 3's platform, something that I still find surprising given the low water temperature, the really clear water and the fact that this line was little more than 18" deep ...

All the gear ...

28 October 2017, Middle Lake (Gold Valley)

Yet another meltdown on peg 87 on the Middle Lake at Gold Valley again today - last time I was on this peg I came next to last in section with 22lb, this time I've managed to come last in section with 9-8-0!!! To say that I do not want to draw this peg ever again is a massive understatement!!!

Sunday 22 October 2017

22 October 2017, Gold Lake (Gold Valley)

Something of a match to forget really!!! I had hoped for a nice draw on the near bank of Syndicate but ended-up on Gold Lake – which I didn’t even know was included today! The plan of attack was to batter the 25m line with big pellets and bag-up on the bomb or waggler, but as it happened the wind scuppered this plan as the pellets were going everywhere and fishing the waggler was simply impossible. All three bites came on a 32g medium hybrid feeder (which is actually quite big) cast to the central rope (I had to set-up the 12’ feeder rod to get there) fished with a cut-down orange wafter. No liners, just pulls out of the blue.

Unfortunately that island wasn't in my peg

As it happened I seemed to have suffered yet another bad draw as Stefan Gent to my right only weighed 10lb and Darren Millis to his right only caught 3 skimmers. I was battered by Luke Gasson on 49, but he could cast to the island so had a nice feature to focus on. Further to Luke’s left the middle of the lake fished really well with 3 one hundred plus pound weights.

13 October 2017, Porth Reservoir (White Acres)

Preston Innovations day 5. Obviously I'm writing this after the fact so I now know that a section win would've seen me finish 8th overall and I only needed to score 6 points today to get into the £25k final. As it was I could only muster 4 points from Porth 78 (the peg that Andy Power came last in section from yesterday), a combination of pike and not really knowing what I was doing (mainly the latter) seeing me return a poor 3lb something.

The mighty Porth Reservoir

In reality I was never going to do any good from Porth (in my previous three visits I've scored 1, 3 and 3 points), so scoring just 3 points from Bolingey on Monday has turned-out to be fatal. Regardless, managing 2 lake seconds and a section win in three days is more than I could ever have hoped for, and I'll be dining-out on beating Andy Bennett at Trewaters for years to come!!! In the end I finished with 29 points dropping 3 for 46th overall, ahead of the likes of Alan Scotthorne, Neil McKinnon, Jamie Wilde, James Dent, Harry Billing and Darren Cox to name just a few ...

There's that seatbox again!

Thursday 12 October 2017

12 October 2017, Trewaters (White Acres)

Preston Innovations festival day 4. Trewaters 51 was my home for the day, a nice peg that comes with your own oak tree that proceeded to bomb me with acorns all day. Anyway the fishing was good as I somehow managed to beat Simon Fry and Andy Bennett to come second in section with 81-5-0, one fish behind the winner who had 84lb. That gives me 3, 8, 9 and 8 points (29th overall) - 7 more for a place in the big money final and 9 for a top 10 finish ... #squeakybumtime

Nice flask

Wednesday 11 October 2017

11 October 2017, Trelawney (White Acres)

Preston Innovations festival day 3 and my home for the day was a nice end peg in the form of peg 21 on Trelawney. With 2 hours to go I probably only had 10 pounds in the net but luckily I managed to snare a few carp and some massive F1s from in front of peg 20's platform to finish with a section winning 64-13-0, a result that moves me onto 20 points and into 44th place overall.

Muddy!

Tuesday 10 October 2017

10 October 2017, Pollawyn (White Acres)

Preston Innovations festival day 2 today and I drew a flyer in the form of Pollawyn 27, a cracking peg on the High Bank opposite the end of the central island. The weather was wet and windy but I managed to catch a couple of carp on the hybrid feeder to the island and 8 or 9 on the bomb into open water to finish with 55-11-0, good enough for second in section and second on the lake, a mere 70lb behind the truly awesome Andy Bennett who caught more than the rest of us put together! 11 points now, 82nd overall ...

Count the superstars!

Monday 9 October 2017

09 October 2017, Bolingey (White Acres)

Preston Innovations festival day 1 and I'm off to my usual bad start I'm afraid! Peg 22 on Bolingey was my home for the day - this is in a shady area on the main lake at the rear of the complex and I think it is a peg known as "the coldest peg in Cornwall" (if it isn't then it isn't far from it). Anyway I didn't do myself any favours by making some tactical errors but I should've done better than 5 carp and an solitary F1 for 29-5-0 (easily my lowest weight at Bolingey ever) for 3 points and a stunning 130th overall!!!

If only that island was a meter closer

Saturday 30 September 2017

30 September 2017, Middle Lake (Gold Valley)

A better day today, this time I was on peg 99 on the Middle Lake at Gold Valley with Will Raison next door on 100. Rather predictably I got beat-up with my 51-5-0 trailing Will's 80 odd pounds by miles, though at least that gave me a default section win and just another three pounds would've put me in the frame ...

Looks like autumn to me

Sunday 24 September 2017

24 September 2017, Middle Lake (Gold Valley)

Something of a mini-meltdown on Middle Lake at Gold Valley today, basically I couldn't catch anything and my rather poor 22-2-0 left me with more questions than answers and next to last in the section!!!

Yet another photo of my seatbox

Saturday 23 September 2017

23 September 2017, Syndicate Lake (Gold Valley)

Gold Valley, Syndicate Lake (end) peg 142 today - could only manage a below average 66-4-0 of carp mainly caught on the long pole with corn tight to the bank when a few fish eventually bothered to turn-up in the final hour!!!

Welcome to the jungle!

Sunday 3 September 2017

03 September 2017, Lodge Lake (Viaduct Fishery)

Well it was an open match on the Lodge Lake at Viaduct today, and after two days of wall-to-wall sunshine it was a bit of a shock to get a right soaking from the changeable English summer! Unfortunately I once again paid the price for losing 4 of the 7 fish hooked on the pole (including a 15 pound fish hooked in the first two minutes), this time the legs of the platform being my nemesis! Managed to come fifth overall but really should've been able to break into the top three - I'm off now to work on my big fish playing technique!!!

Damn legs!

Saturday 2 September 2017

02 September 2017, Cary Lake (Viaduct Fishery)

Day two of the Chris Fox two-day at Viaduct today, my first match on the so-called 'scary' Cary! My inexperience certainly showed and I found it a real struggle in the hot, still conditions. Should've fed 5 or 6 times the amount of 8mm pellets and should've had some PVA as both seemed crucial!!!

Another bad day at the office

Friday 1 September 2017

01 September 2017, Campbell Lake (Viaduct Fishery)

Day one of the Chris Fox two-dayer at Viaduct, drew Campbell 128 which is the peg on the opposite side of the spit from the peg (129) that I was on last time on this lake. Somehow I managed to have an even worse day than last time and lost even more fish in the brambles - for every fish landed two snapped me on the razor sharp branches to my right! Managed to weigh a very poor 82-12-0 but should've had at least 150lb ...

Next time I'm bringing a strimmer

Sunday 27 August 2017

27 August 2017, Middle Lake (Gold Valley)

Day two of a bank holiday double back on the Middle Lake at Gold Valley again today, peg 89 being my home for the day. Given the sunny and still conditions it was no surprise to see lots of the older, bigger fish sunning themselves so I split my match between trying to dob munters and fishing for the new F1s and small carp. In the end I managed 4 older fish (two on the waggler and two on the long pole) and along with a few smaller fish I weighed a reasonable 41-4-0, one out of the money for the second day in a row as the mighty Giovanni Barbato took the double default section win with 41-12-0! To make matters worse only 44lb was needed to make the frame!!!

Middle Lake, peg 89

Saturday 26 August 2017

26 August 2017, Middle Lake (Gold Valley)

Another go at the Gold Valley Saturday open again today and a nice draw in corner peg 61 on the Middle Lake. Despite the peg looking like an aquarium before the start it actually turned into a bit of a struggle and I could only manage 27-0-0, not a great weight but I'd thought I'd snuck a default section win - until Nick Howells slammed a double figure fish on the scales to beat me by 4lb! One out of the money again!

Middle Lake, peg 61 (again)

Wednesday 23 August 2017

20 August 2017, Syndicate Lake (Gold Valley)

Back to Gold Valley once again today for the open match on Syndicate Lake - I was really hoping for a draw that started 11 or 12 so was a little underwhelmed to draw peg 106, an area with little form on the near bank next to the car park. Having said that the first half an hour was good with three carp for 21lb on the waggler - had I been able to maintain that catch rate I'd have won the match with 210lb, but as it happened I then went for 3 hours without a bite, only to be saved by a one eyed crucian with 90 minutes to go!

Syndicate Lake, peg 106

Even then that last part of the match was disappointing with just 3 skimmers from a 5m meat line gracing the net, so no sign of a carp in the final 4 and a half hours!!! This left me with 29-2-0 for last in section, though not last in the match as I somehow managed to beat two anglers on the far bank! Well done to Charlie Dalton on paralysing the match with 200lb+ and to the unlucky Lee Simmons on coming second from the jackpot peg 118!!!

Bigger side tray needed!

Sunday 13 August 2017

13 August 2017, Middle Lake (Gold Valley)

Back to Gold Valley for the open match on Middle Lake again today, peg 75 to be precise. Things started well with a dobbed 10 pounder in the net after 7 minutes!!! Unfortunately this wasn't the sign of things to come and the dobbable fish that were present before the all-in soon disappeared. A switch to the new fish was equally disappointing - after 90 minutes I'd completely given-up on trying to catch them as I only had 8 in the net and was going nowhere fast! The remainder of the match was pretty tortuous too as I only managed three more fish (all on the pellet waggler) - an 8 pounder, a 4 pounder and a new fish - for a below par 30-4-0, though this was enough to beat Tom Arnot off the next peg and was actually fifth (out of twelve) on the causeway bank as it fished much, much harder than of late.

Middle Lake, peg 75

Until next time ...

Sunday 6 August 2017

06 August 2017, Campbell Lake (Viaduct Fishery)

Today was an open match on Campbell, Bagger landed on 126 and I was on 129. Personally I had a nightmare with lost fish, hooklengths, rigs, floats, pole pots and a top kit plus a number 4 (that somehow stayed afloat and was salvaged by the angler diagonally across to my left on the far bank) to weigh 89-12-0 (second in section by 3lb, losing over 100lb of fish costing me somewhat). Bagger had a better day, landing just 8 fish for over 90 pounds!!!

Campbell 129

Until next time ...

Saturday 5 August 2017

05 August 2017, Campbell Lake (Viaduct Fishery)

Today was the second day of our mini escape to Viaduct Fishery in Somerset – we drove down yesterday and spent the day practising/pleasure fishing on Cary before having a nice meal (gammon and chips as it happens) and a few beers in the Unicorn Hotel in Somerton (which by the way is open until 2am – hic).

Not really a case of “when in Rome” as we were in Somerset!

Any lingering traces of a hang-over were soon dispatched by a cracking full English in the hotel before heading down to the venue for today’s event, a 40 peg Angling for Heroes match split evenly between Campbell and Cary organised by the main men Michael Homer and Darren Millis. (This match would go on to raise over £800 for charity and the guys organise similar matches all over the country – click on the link below to check out their Facebook page.)

The usual pre-match excitement

After buying some raffle tickets it was soon time to get into the queue for the draw – after a good old rummage in the ice bucket of dreams out pops number 112, a nice draw on the near bank of Campbell and according to Ian ‘Dicko’ Dixon a bit of a flyer (he’d know of course, never having drawn a duffer himself).

Time to walk the plank

Campbell is essentially a rectangular lake that I’d guess is 50-60m wide. Anglers are pegged on both of the long banks and unusually there is also a peg on each short bank too. 110 is the corner peg nearest the car park (I think 135 is the one next to it on the short bank) so my peg 112 was just a couple of pegs out of that corner and pretty much directly opposite the aerator (that runs 24/7). The fishing position is at the end of a bit of a runway that extends some 10m from the bank – this means that you’ve had it if any items of tackle fall-off your side tray and has the effect of putting your margin lines directly behind you!

Looking right towards the flyers!

I started my match on the short pole with meat – unfortunately this didn’t lead to any carp (just a couple of skimmers) so it was soon out to 14.5m with hard pellets on the deck. This was a bit better and I landed two carp in quick succession – and then the fizzing started!!! I kept going for a while and managed to sneak a couple more but it was no good really, that fizzing being a real pain.

Looking across to the far side

So it was time for plan C, the straight lead at 25m where I got one straight away on a 10mm wafter – this was something of a false dawn as it then went a bit iffy, I did manage a few more but unusually for the straight lead most were hooked outside of the mouth. Over to the pellet waggler on the same line but this was no good, so it was back to 14.5m on the deck where I got a couple more, leaving me on a reasonable 50lb at the halfway point.

Don’t look back in anger

I’m trying to think of an eloquent way of putting this but basically it then went rock hard for two hours and I probably only got two carp in this period – one on the bomb and one on the long pole shallow, not really the bagging session I was hoping for. Fortunately the last hour was good, initially with two good carp on the short pole with meat then 4 or 5 big ones from the margin on corn in the last half an hour or so – people normally talk about fishing lines in front at 11 o’clock or 1 o’clock, but this line was effectively fished at a quarter to six as I was sitting on my box backwards facing the bank behind me!!!

Nice to get an envelope for a change!

In the end my bag of carp and the odd skimmer went 110-12-0, just about good enough for sixth overall and second in the 10 peg section – though as Mark Wynne next door had hammered-out 179-12-0 on the straight lead (a tactic that I couldn’t get working) to come second overall I picked-up the section envelope by default. (David White won the match with 182-12-0 from Cary 109, his son Dan White completed the frame with his third placed 178-10-0 from Cary 88.)

So thanks again to the fishery staff Steve and Matt for doing the weigh-in and to the guys from Angling for Heroes for organising the event – don’t forget to check-out that link above!

Until next time …

Sunday 30 July 2017

30 July 2017, Syndicate Lake (Gold Valley)

Gold Valley, Syndicate Lake 112 today ... spent most of the day cursing myself for losing a 15lber in the first 5 minutes!!! Eventually caught a few on the waggler and had a good last 30 minutes on the straight lead to finish with 80-4-0, one out of the money as Olly Tilley had just over 100lb!

Wagglers at the ready!!!

Until next time ...

Saturday 29 July 2017

29 July 2017, Middle Lake (Gold Valley)

Gold Valley, Middle Lake 75 today ... basically my plan to feed aggressively with groundbait and maggots at TK+3 then catch loads of big skimmers and the odd stockie carp/F1 back-fired and I had my arse kicked by Robbie Taylor (who was next door on 77)!

Middle Lake, peg 75

Until next time ...

Sunday 23 July 2017

23 July 2017, New Lake (Willinghurst)

Well what a day to forget that certainly was! Round 4 of the Avon Valley summer league at Willinghurst today, New Lake peg 5 being my home for the day. To cut a very long and tortuous story short I worked five different lines for the full 5 hours and I could only manage one carp for a level 7lb - this meant I could only beat one angler in my section and to add insult to injury another 12 ounces would've seen me double my points return!

All the gear ...

Until next time ...

Saturday 15 July 2017

15 July 2017, Middle Lake (Gold Valley)

Different fishing day this weekend (Saturday) but the same venue (Gold Valley) and the same peg as a couple of weeks ago (Middle Lake 91), so not for the first time (and almost certainly not the last) I’ve managed to draw the same peg twice within a matter of weeks!

Is all this stuff really needed?

Looking back at the blog from my previous attempt at peg 91 (on the 18th of June) it can be seen that I spent the first half of the match failing to catch the bigger, older carp that still reside in this lake before switching my attentions to the F1s, stockie carp and skimmers – as a result I managed 40 odd pounds in just over two hours and was left with the feeling that it might be possible to reach the magic 100lb mark by targeting them all day.

Once at the peg the chances of catching any big carp seemed even less than last time – the wind was blasting from right to left (as it had been for a number of days apparently, presumably pushing a lot of fish into end pegs 84/85) and given the cool, cloudy conditions there weren’t any cruisers visible so it was time to put the theory to the test!

Middle Lake, peg 91 (again)

Not completely discounting my chances of catching a big carp or two, whilst still giving myself a couple of options to catch the smaller fish, I set-up the following before the start of the match:
  • One of my Daiwa Airity tip rods with a Guru X-Safe 19g inline lead and a 30cm hooklength of 0.17 N-Gauge into a size 12 QM1 with a 10mm hair (for fishing with a wafter over loose-fed 8mm pellets at 25-30m)
  • A top kit (fitted with green Nick Gilbert Amber Core elastic) featuring a rig consisting of 0.17 main line, a 4x16 Malman Roob and a 15cm hooklength of 0.13 into a size 18 LWG (for fishing at top kit plus 3)
  • Another top kit (green elastic again) featuring the same rig as above but with a slightly smaller 4x14 Roob (for fishing the (fairly deep) right margin with a top kit only)

The view to the right

On the whistle I fed 4 balls of Bait-Tech Special G (a 50:50 mix of gold and green) on the top kit plus 3 line, flicked my bomb/wafter rig to 25m and pinged a few pouches of 8mm pellets over the top. After three or four minutes I sensed that this wasn’t the way to go so I switched to the margin line in order to start building towards my target weight of small fish.

My chosen feed and hookbait for this line were red maggots – the stockie carp and F1 seem to love them, but so unfortunately do the margin-hugging micro-perch! I could tell that there were plenty of the intended species down there but more often than not the tiny perch were getting to the hookbait first – having limited options on my side tray (these tiny fish aren’t normally an issue away from the margins) I ended-up fishing with the tiniest grains of corn I could find in a tin of Jolly Green Giant. (And I mean tiny! There’s no way the newly stocked carp could get a proper sized grain in their mouths!) This had the desired effect and in fact got me a massive bonus in the form of a near double-figure fish after about twenty minutes!!!

Tidy side tray for once!

After nearly an hour it was time to look on the TK+3 line – I had expected it to be solid but initially I couldn’t get a bite, the fish having clearly cleaned-out the groundbait fed at the start of the match. Feeding another couple of balls of Special G did the trick, though the sport wasn’t as hectic as previous sessions, possibly due to the slightly cooler weather conditions or possibly due to the number of matches that have been held on this lake lately.

With a couple of hours gone I didn’t seem to be going anywhere so after feeding 4 more balls of groundbait on the TK+3 line I decided to flick my bomb and wafter to the rope (regretfully I hadn’t been feeding 8mm pellets via a catapult as I should’ve been whilst fishing the pole) – after a couple of minutes the tip pulled ‘round and I was attached to a nice skimmer (I’d hoped it was a carp but that’s life I guess). Switching to an X-Safe inline cage feeder with a 60cm hooklength and two dead red maggots I quickly snared two more before a couple of chucks with nothing but chewed maggots saw a switch to a 30cm tail – this instantly led to a stockie carp then absolutely nothing!!!

The view to the left

Whilst fishing the feeder I’d taken the opportunity to pump a few 4mm expander pellets and prepare some 4mm hard pellets (by adding a little pellet oil to get them to sink quickly) – the combination of these baits seemed to work well on the margin line and meant that every bite was from a stockie carp or an F1, the perch not seeming to fancy pellets.

Plenty of bites!

By continuing to feed the TK+3 line aggressively with groundbait I was also able to get amongst more skimmers, but as before I knew that the intended 100 pounds plus of small fish definitely wasn’t on the cards – my final weight of 57-0-0 consisting of 11-0-0 of bigger carp (that early margin munter and another 2lb sample I felt worthy of placing into my big fish net) and 46-0-0 of skimmers, stockie carp and F1s.

Caption competition time!

Surprisingly this was enough to beat all of the anglers to my left on my bank (despite the wind blowing that way) and when the two anglers to my right couldn’t beat me I thought I was in for some section money – until the mighty Mark Eves slammed 70 odd pounds onto the scales from (end) peg 97 that is!!! (Mark’s weight consisted of just 30 pounds of small fish but 40 plus pounds of big carp, once again showing that to do well on this lake you definitely need a good amount of big fish, albeit backed-up with a reasonable amount of smaller fish.) Well done to Paul ‘Tommy’ Hiller on the win and Nick Howell on taking second place!!!

Until next time ...

09 July 2017, Middle Lake (Gold Valley)

After a cracking walking holiday in the Lake District last week it was back on the bank again today and another go at an open match on Middle Lake at Gold Valley – there wasn’t a huge turn-out but it was a quality field once again featuring the likes of Daiwa Dorking’s Paul ‘Tommy’ Hiller and Mark Goddard as well as the usual venue experts in the form of Olly Tilley, Charlie Dalton and Eddie Green (the older version).

Peg 61 on Middle Lake

Having fished a couple of competitions on this lake recently I had formed a pre-match plan that involved drawing a nice peg in the middle of the lake and fishing for the newly stocked carp and original skimmers with maggots over groundbait from front to back, ignoring the older/bigger carp and trying to build a winning weight by catching the smaller fish at a decent rate all day. Unfortunately this plan was somewhat scuppered when I drew peg 61, the corner peg nearest the clubhouse – this had been a great peg through the winter (as the new fish seemed to shoal-up next to the parallel margin), but since the weather has warmed-up and the fish have spread-out a quick look at the Gold Valley Facebook page revealed some really poor weights returned by some really top anglers!

Pre-match tidy side tray

Being a rather warm day again there were quite a few of the older carp cruising about and as I had access to the parallel margin to my left I set-up the following before the start of the match:
  • Mugging rig #1 featuring black Nick Gilbert Amber Core elastic, a top kit’s worth of 0.17 Guru N-Gauge, a 0.6g Drennan inline crystal dibber and a 25cm hooklength made-up of 0.15 line into a size 16 LWG with a hair loop
  • Mugging rig #2 – same as above but featuring a hair-rigged pellet band instead of a loop
  • A pellet waggler rod incorporating one of the new Guru foam wagglers (3SSG)
  • A rig for fishing straight in front at TK+3 for the new carp made-up of green Nick Gilbert Amber Core elastic, 0.17 mainline, a 4x16 Malman Roob and a 15cm hooklength of 0.13 into a size 16 Kaizen
  • A final rig for fishing tight to the parallel margin to the left consisting of black Nick Gilbert Amber Core elastic, 0.17, a 0.4g Drennan margin crystal and a 15cm hooklength of 0.15 into a size 16 Kaizen – this rig was slightly heavier than the one above as I was hoping some of the older carp might be lurking here alongside the newer fish and there was a snaggy looking overhanging tree to deal with!

Cheeky bow wave

I started the match by feeding 4 balls of Bait-Tech Special G groundbait and dead read maggots on the TK+3 line (with hindsight this was something of a mistake but more on that later) and picked-up mugging rig #1 – a 7mm cube of luncheon meat was mounted on the hair and I began looking for cruising carp within pole range. By standing on the footplate of my box and wearing the correct eyewear (prescription Oakley sunglasses) I was able to spot a number of candidates and in less than 30 minutes I had three nice big carp in the net for 20 plus pounds – not a bad start when you consider that only a low 60lb weight was needed to pick-up money on Friday’s match on this lake!

The view to the left

Inevitably the cruising carp disappeared so after 45 minutes it was time to switch my attentions to the smaller carp and F1s that had hopefully moved over my TK+3 line – in fact I knew that they had as this part of my swim was fizzing like mad and looked like a faulty jacuzzi! I thought the bottom felt a bit sticky when plumbing-up but as I’d never really experienced any silty swims on this lake before I ignored it, definitely another item for the ever growing cock-up list! Whilst there were plenty of fish present it was really hard to get a run of proper bites going, no doubt due to the fact that the fish couldn’t see my hookbait given all of the silt that was being churned-up!!!

Mid-match side tray carnage

At this point I should’ve moved this line a meter or so to the left or right but instead I decided to let the fizzing subside and tried loose feeding live maggots via a pole mounted pot instead. This seemed to work for a while - until the fish came-up in the water that is, something that I’m still surprised by as this line was certainly no more than 3 feet deep! I hastily set-up a jigga rig and after landing 5 fish in as many minutes I thought I’d stumbled onto a winning formula before the fish disappeared on me – luckily a switch back to the long pole mugging rig got me another big fish on a 7mm cube of luncheon meat so I felt I was back on track for a decent score as at the halfway point as I reckoned on having about 40 pounds in the net.

Yours truly playing a late fish

Unfortunately the second half of the match wasn’t as good as the first! I didn’t see a single muggable fish for the remainder of the match and the supply of stockie carp from the TK+3 line soon petered-out, the only saving grace being a big carp out of the blue on this short line and a bit of a run of fish towards the end of the match from the line tight to the bank to the left – I probably should’ve caught more from this line but I got a little hacked-off having to re-tie rigs for this line 3 times after being taken through the overhanging branches on a number of occasions!!!

Not quite enough!

In the end my fish went 61-8-0, 38lb of big carp and 23-8-0 of stockie carp and F1s. This left me one from last in my five peg section though it shows how tight things were as I was less than 25 pounds behind eventual winner Olly Tilley!!!

Until next time ...
